Question riles Clinton; translation might have been off

11 August 2009

The question may have been lost in translation, but a visibly angry Secretary of State Hillary Clinton bluntly told a town-hall meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, "I will you tell you my opinion, I'm not going to channel my husband."
Hillary Clinton became visibly angry after a translator asked what Bill Clinton would think regarding an issue.
The unscripted moment happened as Clinton spoke to students at a Congolese university in Kinshasa, the Congo capital.
A male student rose to ask a question about Chinese financial contracts with Congo.
The student asked Clinton what President Obama would think of the deal, but pool reporters in the room said the translator made a mistake, posing the question as what would Bill Clinton think.
Clinton looked surprised when she first heard the translation in the headset, and then sharply replied, "You want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not the secretary of state, I am. You ask my opinion. I will tell you my opinion; I'm not going to channel my husband." source: cnn.com

Pakistan drone attack 'kills 10'

At least 10 suspected militants have been killed in a strike by a US drone in north-west Pakistan, local intelligence officials say.
The attack targeted an insurgents' camp in South Waziristan near the Afghan border, the officials said.
The area is the stronghold of Pakistani Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, whose death in an earlier strike has not yet been confirmed.
There have been dozens of such drone strikes in the past year.
Hundreds of militants and civilians have been killed.
Most of the strikes have taken place in the tribal regions of North and South Waziristan.

'Mommy bloggers' vow to avoid ethical conflicts

With book deals, TV appearances and thousands of readers, moms who detail every moment of their domestic lives online produce some of the Web's most well-read blogs.
'Mommy bloggers' want to stem what they fear is a backlash against their profession.
Many of these "mommy bloggers" even draw the attention of companies that send them free product samples -- everything from toys to baby strollers to video game consoles -- in the hopes of getting positive coverage.
But to some, these freebies aren't necessarily a good thing. Readers have complained they can no longer trust their favorite blogger's advice. Veteran women bloggers grumble that newcomers sully the genre's reputation by demanding free products and trips. Newsweek.com published an article last month headlined, "Trusted Mom or Sellout?"
"There has been a turn of goodwill [against mommy bloggers]," said Liz Gumbinner, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Cool Mom Picks. "A year ago, bloggers were rising stars. Six months later, really big marketers like Wal-Mart got into the game and started backing bloggers.
"That created a new paradigm: An A-list blogger was not the one who wrote the best and had the most influence, but had the most marketing attention and free products," she added. "It created a new generation of bloggers who blogged to get free stuff."
So Gumbinner and other women bloggers are taking steps to become more transparent and stem what they fear is a backlash against their profession.

Couple behind Baby P death named

The couple responsible for the death of 17-month-old Baby Peter have been named after a court anonymity order expired.
He died in Haringey, north London, in the care of his mother Tracey Connelly, 28, and her partner Steven Barker, 33.
A third defendant in the case named as Jason Owen, 37, is now identified as Barker's brother. Baby Peter's surname, Connelly, has also been released.
In May, Connelly and Barker were given minimum terms of five and 12 years for causing or allowing the death of Peter.
In a separate court case, Barker was also given a life sentence for raping a two-year-old girl.
Peter had more than 50 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken back, when he was found dead in a property in Penshurst Road, Tottenham, in August 2007.
It emerged Owen had changed his name to avoid being connected to the killing of Peter.
Jason Owen changed his surname to avoid being linked to the killing
Owen, 37, who was jailed for three years, was staying at the home in Tottenham, which is within the borough of Haringey, with his 15-year-old girlfriend.
Speaking to the BBC, Connelly's grandmother Mary O'Connor said she still had contact with her, but did not know "what to believe".
"She lied. She lied to the police, she lied to me and to social services."
It has also been revealed that the brothers were charged with assaulting their own grandmother, Hilda Barker, who lived in Whitstable, Kent, in 1995, in an attempt to make her change her will.
That case was dropped when Mrs Barker, 82, died before giving evidence, but she told police she had been locked in a wardrobe by the pair.
It can also be reported that Baby Peter had four siblings.
A judge had ordered none of the defendants could be named because the other children were still being placed with alternative carers. Barker's trial for rape also contributed to the delay in naming the defendants. source: bbc.com

Ex-homeless woman leaves $150,000 to Hebrew University

A Jewish Holocaust survivor who later lived on the streets of New York City has left half of her $300,000 estate to Hebrew University, the school said Monday.

"It moved us very much," university spokesman Yefet Ozery said in a telephone interview from Jerusalem, where the school is based.

"Hebrew University has many, many donors and benefactors and supporters and many people remember us in their will, but I haven't come across such a person that lived actually as a poor woman who would give half of her bequest to Hebrew University," Ozery said.
The woman, who died two years ago in her 90s, has not been identified publicly at the request of her estate's executor, he said.
"He didn't want her name to be remembered as a homeless" person, Ozery said.
The woman, who had no known relatives, survived a concentration camp and was living on the streets of New York's Upper West Side several years ago when a Jewish accountant befriended her, Ozery said.
"He and his wife adopted her pretty much to their home and supplied her with basic needs," which included finding her public housing, he said.
In return, the woman moved the couple's car from one side of the street to the other so that it would not be ticketed, he said.
At the time, they had no clue to her net worth, Ozery said.
"When the woman told him and his wife that she would be leaving a will, they thought to themselves that there would be nothing there because they knew her as owning nothing," he said.
It was only when the woman died that the couple learned of her wealth, which she had kept in a bank.
"They were very surprised to find out that she left this amount and that half of it went to Hebrew University," Ozery said.
How she accumulated the money, the balance of which went to other causes and to her friends, is not known, he said.
Her executor -- the accountant who befriended her -- told school officials of the gift three months ago, but they did not learn the circumstances behind it until last week, Ozery said. There was no obvious connection between her and the school.
A friend of the accountant took the first check to the school last week and told administrators the story behind it.
"Everybody was moved and excited," Ozery said. "This was a special story and a special gift."
In keeping with the woman's wishes, the money is to be spent on medical research and scholarships for researchers, he said. source: cnn.com

Pirates free Italian ship after 4 months

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Pirates released an Italian ship four months after they seized it, Italy's foreign minister announced Sunday.
Franco Frattini expressed his "joy at the positive outcome ... relating to the kidnapping of the merchant vessel Buccaneer and for the release" of the crew.
Somali pirates freed the vessel after months of negotiations, the ministry said.
The ministry strongly denied a ransom had been paid, but released no other details about the talks with the pirates.
The Buccaneer has a crew of 16: 10 Italians, 5 Romanians and a Croat, the ministry said. They are expected home in about two days.
The tug was seized in the Gulf of Aden on April 11, Cyrus Mody of the International Maritime Bureau told CNN. source: cnn.com

Young leaders dominate Fatah vote

Younger leaders have gained powerful posts in Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, early results from its first poll in 20 years show.
Mr Abbas remains the head, but several veterans apparently lost seats on the powerful central committee.
Popular jailed leader Marwan Barghouti, and influential Mohammad Dahlan, who is disliked by supporters of rival faction Hamas, were both set to gain seats.
Young members wanted to depose an "old guard" seen as divided and corrupt.
The party, which lost elections to Hamas in 2006, has been trying to restore its image as ineffective and dominated by cronyism.
Preliminary results from the vote during the congress in the West Bank town of Bethlehem showed new officials had gained 14 out of 18 seats on the powerful central committee.
Heather Sharp, BBC News, Jerusalem
Finally, the vote was held, after a long week, dogged by rows and factions' fears that their rivals had stacked the conference with sympathisers.
Palestinians may be heartened that Fatah got this far, and the sway of ageing exiles who do not share their daily struggles has been reduced.
But the so-called "new blood" are all established players in Palestinian politics, and still have a lot to prove if they are to convince voters they have left behind the days of corruption and infighting under Arafat.
While they broadly agree on a two-state solution, there are differences over Hamas. Mr Barghouti's supporters want to push harder for unity - and he remains in jail in any case - while Mr Dahlan is at the forefront of the feud.
Elections slated for 2010 will not happen without some kind of deal with Hamas. So for most Palestinians, a unified leadership with a popular mandate to fight their cause on the international stage remains as far off as ever.
Can Fatah reinvent itself
Profile: Fatah movement
Less than half of the 10 members of the so-called "old guard", who were seeking re-election, managed to hold onto their seats on the central committee, the results showed.
The Fatah veteran Ahmed Qurei, who was the first Palestinian prime minister, was on course to lose his seat.
Saeb Erekat, a key negotiator with Israel, and Jibril Rajoub, who like Mr Dahlan has led one of the party's security forces, also gained posts on the committee, the partial results showed. source: bbc.com

Aerosmith shelve further concerts

Rock band Aerosmith have cancelled a further three Canadian concerts while frontman Steve Tyler continues to recover from a stage fall. Three dates this week have been shelved following gigs at the weekend, but are due to be rescheduled.
Tyler, 61, suffered neck, head and shoulder injuries after falling off the stage at a concert in South Dakota.
Their tour is due to continue in the US next week, but an announcement about if it is going ahead has yet to be made.
The band's guitarist Joe Perry told US radio station WXRX that he though it could be up to two months before they would be able to resume touring.
Aerosmith's recent concert appearances have been plagued by health problems.
Seven shows were postponed this summer after Tyler injured his leg at a gig in June, while bassist Tom Hamilton pulled out of the tour as he recovered from "non-invasive" surgery.
Guitarist Brad Whitford also missed some concerts after hitting his head while getting out of his Ferrari, and the band cancelled a gig in Venezuela in January while Joe Perry fought off a knee infection. source; bbc.com

Deadly mudslides strike across East Asia

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- The wrath of Typhoon Morakot has affected nearly 9 million people across four coastal China provinces and killed dozens in Taiwan, officials said Tuesday.
A rescue worker carries a child on Tuesday who survived flooding in southern Taiwan.
1 of 3 The typhoon, which stormed through the Philippines and Taiwan before slamming into eastern China over the weekend, has forced more than 1.4 million people to relocate on the mainland, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs said.
At last six people -- four of them in Zhejiang province -- were killed along the coast, and more than 6,000 homes were destroyed.
In Taiwan, Morakot was blamed for at least 38 deaths, 35 injuries and 62 missing people, said Yu-chu Liang, a senior official with Taiwan's National Disasters Prevention and Protection Commission.
The village of Siaolin was one of several engulfed by flooding and mudslides in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung County over the weekend, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported.
Villagers rescued from a massive mudslide in Siaolin said at least 300 others were feared trapped beneath debris, state-run media reported Tuesday. Liang couldn't confirm that figure, but said officials thought that more than 100 people were buried alive.
Helicopters plucked more than 60 survivors from Siaolin and headed back for 150 more people still struggling through the debris, he said. The mudslide buried roadways and cut water and electric supplies, Liang added. source: cnn.com

Michael Schumacher has called off his eagerly-anticipated Formula One comeback with Ferrari because he has not recovered from a neck injury he sustained in a motorcycling accident earlier this year.
Michael Schumacher has called off his much-anticipated return to Formula One.
more photos » Schumacher was due to replace the injured Felipe Massa for the Italian team at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23, but announced on his personal Web site that these plans have now been scrapped.

Nazi war criminal jailed for life

A former German infantry commander has been jailed for life for his role in the killing of 14 civilians in an Italian village during World War II. A Munich state court found 90-year-old Josef Scheungraber guilty of ordering the killings, in what was one of the last Nazi crimes trials in Germany.
Scheungraber had previously been sentenced in absentia by an Italian military court to life in prison.
The killings took place in Falzano di Cortona, in Tuscany, on 26 June 1944. Scheungraber had always denied the charges, saying he handed the victims to the military police and did not know what happened to them.
His legal team had called for his acquittal due to contradictions in the testimony of witnesses 65 years after the events.
Free for decades
Dressed in a traditional Bavarian jacket, Scheungraber appeared in good health as his sentence was handed down.
The court found that as a 25-year-old Wehrmacht lieutenant, he had ordered the brutal killings in revenge for an attack by Italian partisans that left two German soldiers dead.
Although he was charged with 14 counts of murder and one of attempted murder, Scheungraber was actually convicted of 10 murders due to a lack of evidence.
German troops shot dead a 74-year-old woman and three men in the street before forcing 11 others into a farmhouse which they then blew up.
Only the youngest - a 15-year-old boy named Gino Massetti - survived, and he gave evidence during the trial in Munich.
Scheungraber, the former commander of a company of engineers, had lived for decades as a free man, and served on the town council in Ottobrunn, outside Munich.
He ran a furniture shop, attended German veterans' marches and recently received an award for municipal service.
Although he was sentenced to life in prison for the Tuscany killings by an Italian military tribunal in La Spezia in September 2006, Scheungraber did not attend that trial as Germany generally does not extradite its citizens without their consent. source: bbc.com

China landslide crushes buildings

At least six apartment blocks have collapsed following landslides in eastern China, trapping an unknown number of people, state media report.
Officials say they have managed to pull six people alive from the rubble in the town of Pengxi in Zhejiang province.
The landslides were triggered by heavy rains caused by Typhoon Morakot, which has swept across parts of East Asia.
Meanwhile in Taiwan, hundreds of people are feared dead after a mudslide caused by the typhoon buried a small village.

A witness told Chinese television it took "one second" for the mud and rocks to engulf the four-storey apartment buildings.
The BBC's Quentin Sommerville says six or seven apartment blocks with an estimated 28 families in each are buried in the rubble.
Two people have been confirmed dead so far and the toll is expected to rise, he adds.
Xinhua reports that the rescue operations are being hampered by the large amounts of debris that have fallen onto them.

GOP senator wants Sanford to be impeached

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, already under fire for an extramarital relationship, should be impeached for abusing state finances, a Republican state senator said Monday.
A Republican senator in South Carolina says Gov. Mark Sanford should be impeached over financial violations.
Sen. David Thomas, in a letter to leaders of the constitutional/administrative subcommittee of the South Carolina Senate Finance Committee, accused his fellow Republican of violating state regulations.
The allegations involve flights he took to London, England, and China in 2006 and 2007 on state business. South Carolina requires the governor to charge the state the lowest rate available unless there are overriding circumstances, such as emergency travel.
"The two flights by Gov. Sanford were in violation of the South Carolina Code of Regulations," Thomas said in his letter. "The difference in price between the most economical and the more expensive price of the seats the governor chose is approximately $13,700."
Thomas said he thought the violations were enough to trigger impeachment proceedings.
"If I were in the House, the answer would be yes, I would be involved in the beginning of the impeachment process," he said. "I think there is enough data right now to take seriously a move toward impeachment. Is that sufficient for impeachment? That I don't know." source: cnn.com

Burma court finds Suu Kyi guilty

Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to an additional 18 months' house arrest by a court in Rangoon.
Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace laureate, was convicted of violating state security laws by allowing a US national into her lakeside home after he swam there.
Critics of Burma's military regime say the verdict is designed to prevent her from taking part in elections in 2010.
Ms Suu Kyi has spent nearly 14 of the past 20 years in detention.
American John Yettaw, who was also on trial, was jailed for seven years, four with hard labour.
Ms Suu Kyi, 64, was taken straight back to her home following the end of the trial, officials said.
ANALYSIS
Kate McGeown, BBC News website
Asia-Pacific editor
The fact that the Burmese generals have decided to give Aung San Suu Kyi less than the maximum sentence shows they are willing to compromise, at least to some extent, to the will of the international community.
But at the same time they still have what they really wanted - Aung San Suu Kyi will now be safely out of the way as they prepare for next year's elections.
The opposition leader had denied the charge but said she expected to be convicted.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "saddened and angry" by the verdict and described the trial as a "sham".
In a strongly worded statement, Mr Brown said it was "a purely political sentence".
A statement from the office of Nicolas Sarkozy said the French president was calling on the European Union to impose new sanctions on Burma. source: bbc.com
